Jon Duerr Forest Preserve, South Elgin, IL

Jon Duerr Forest Preserve covers 537 acres along the Fox River in South Elgin and includes more than six miles of maintained trails used for hiking, running, and cycling. The preserve features a 40-foot observation tower at Jon Duerr Tower that provides elevated views of the river valley and surrounding woodlands. A public boat launch near the parking area allows paddlers to access the Fox River for canoeing or kayaking. Picnic shelters with tables and grills are available for outdoor meals, and the preserve includes restrooms and drinking water. Anglers can fish from the shoreline or launch boats at the ramp. The preserve is located less than two miles from downtown South Elgin, where residents have access to grocery stores, restaurants, and municipal services. Its trail network also connects to the Fox River Trail, which extends 40 miles north and south along the river corridor, offering additional mileage for longer rides or walks.
