Nelson Lake Marsh Nature Preserve spans more than 900 acres in Batavia, Illinois, and is managed by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. The preserve includes a 1.25-mile boardwalk that crosses open marsh and leads to two wildlife-viewing blinds. Four additional miles of crushed-limestone trails wind through oak savanna and prairie, connecting to the Fox River Trail and the Great Western Trail. Visitors can launch non-motorized boats from a small canoe/kayak access on Nelson Lake Road, and the preserve provides a gravel parking lot, restrooms, and drinking water. Seasonal hunting is permitted for waterfowl under state regulations. The site is located less than two miles from downtown Batavia and the Metra Union Pacific West Line station, placing residents within a short drive of grocery stores, restaurants, and schools while offering immediate access to extensive open space for walking, bird-watching, and paddling.
