Powell Park sits in central Champaign and covers roughly 30 acres between John and Bradley avenues. A 0.9-mile paved loop circles the park, connecting to the larger Champaign-Urbana bikeway network and offering a flat, lighted route for walking or cycling. The park contains two playgrounds, six lighted tennis courts, two basketball courts, and two baseball/softball fields with covered dugouts. An 18-hole disc-golf course winds through mature oak and maple stands that provide shade along most fairways. A 2.5-acre retention pond stocked with bluegill and channel catfish supports shoreline fishing; a small dock and adjacent picnic shelter allow visitors to clean and cook their catch on-site. Restrooms and drinking fountains are located at the main parking lot, which also serves the adjacent Douglass Branch Library. The park is less than a half-mile from the University of Illinois campus and within two miles of downtown Champaign’s grocery stores, restaurants, and the Illinois Terminal transit station.
