West Side Park, Champaign, IL
West Side Park covers 48 acres at the corner of John and Mattis in Champaign, Illinois. The park contains two lighted softball diamonds, a soccer field, six tennis courts, two playgrounds, and a 1.6-mile paved loop trail that circles the perimeter. A fishing pond stocked with bluegill and channel catfish sits on the southwest corner, and picnic shelters with grills are available by reservation. Mature oak and maple trees line the trail and provide shade to open lawns used for informal sports and kite flying. The park is two blocks south of the Champaign Public Library and within a ten-minute drive of the University of Illinois campus and downtown Champaign retail corridors. Street parking surrounds the park, and the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District maintains a bus stop at the main entrance.
