Augusta National Golf Club occupies 365 acres of former nursery land in Augusta, Georgia, and was founded in 1932 by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts. The course was designed by Jones and Alister MacKenzie, who routed the layout to take advantage of the gently rolling terrain and stands of pine, magnolia, and dogwood. Fairways are bermudagrass overseeded with rye in winter, while the greens are maintained as bentgrass. Water comes into play on five holes, most notably Rae’s Creek, which fronts the twelfth and thirteenth greens and runs behind the eleventh. The property also includes a nine-hole par-three course completed in 1959 and the clubhouse, a former plantation residence built in 1854 that serves as the club’s central gathering place.
