Burgaw Golf sits on a former tobacco farm a few miles west of the Cape Fear River. The front nine carves through low-lying pine flatwoods, where a network of shallow ditches and old field roads still dictate the routing. Fairways are narrow, bordered by thick wiregrass and occasional clusters of longleaf stumps left from the clearing. The back nine shifts to gently rolling terrain created by the sandy ridges that parallel Highway 53. Here the course climbs short rises and drops into modest hollows, requiring players to adjust for elevation changes that are modest but consistent. A pair of man-made ponds, originally dug for irrigation, sit in play on the inward nine, their banks kept low and natural. The greens are built from the same native sand that underlies the entire property, providing firm, fast surfaces that hold only when approached from below the hole. Maintenance records show that the turf mix is predominantly Tifway bermuda overseeded with rye each November, a regimen that keeps play consistent through the region’s mild winters.
