Pinehurst No. 9 occupies gently rolling Sandhills terrain once used as a hunting preserve. The routing alternates between pine-and-wiregrass corridors and open meadows where long-leaf pines stand in irregular clusters. Fairways follow the natural grain of the land, rising and falling in subtle gradients that affect both stance and roll. Several greens sit on modest natural knolls, while others occupy shallow basins, each shaped with the firm, contoured surfaces typical of the region. Native wiregrass and scattered turkey oaks frame most playing corridors, keeping the visual scale intimate. A small tributary of Thagard Lake crosses three successive holes, creating diagonal water carries that vary with pin placement. The course’s irrigation draws from the same aquifer that supplies the rest of the resort, maintaining firm conditions suited to the area’s sandy soils.
