The Deerwood Country Club occupies a 400-acre tract of former pine flatwoods and wetlands in southeast Jacksonville. The course was laid out in the early 1960s by architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and later modified by Bobby Weed. Its fairways follow the natural drainage swales of the St. Johns River floodplain, creating a series of elevation changes that range from near sea level to roughly thirty feet. Greens are TifEagle bermudagrass, overseeded in winter, and are guarded by flashed-up bunkers and occasional live-oak hammocks. Water in the form of ponds, sloughs, and drainage canals comes into play on twelve holes, most notably the par-3 seventh that plays across a tidal finger of the river. The routing alternates between open, wind-exposed stretches and tight corridors shaded by mature oaks and magnolias. Irrigation is supplied by on-site wells drawing from the Floridan aquifer, and the club maintains a separate effluent-water system for non-potable needs.
