Chapel Hill Country Club occupies a rolling tract of land in central North Carolina that was first cleared for farming in the eighteenth century and later planted with hardwoods and pines. The course follows the natural contours of the terrain, routing holes along shallow valleys and across modest ridges. Fairways are kept to a firm, fast condition, while the bent-grass greens are cut at moderate speed and slope subtly in several directions. Drainage channels and a handful of small ponds come into play on several holes, requiring shots to carry or skirt water. The clubhouse, built in 1964 and expanded in 1992, sits on a rise that overlooks the finishing holes. The club maintains an active practice facility with a short-game area and a driving range oriented toward the prevailing southwest wind.
