MacGregor Downs Country Club sits on the shores of MacGregor Lake in western Cary, where the terrain drops sharply from the clubhouse ridge into a series of pine-and-hardwood valleys. The course, routed in 1971 by architect Gene Hamm, threads through preserved stands of loblolly pine and over several spring-fed streams that feed the lake. Large, rolling bentgrass greens are guarded by deep, flashed-face bunkers and occasional water carry on the inward nine. Fairways follow the natural fall of the land, producing uphill approaches on several holes and downhill lies on others. The practice facility features a double-ended range and separate short-game area adjacent to the lake. Membership is private, with access limited to residents of the surrounding MacGregor Downs subdivision and a select number of outside members.
