Charlotte Country Club occupies 170 acres of rolling Piedmont terrain near the center of Charlotte. The golf course, originally designed by Donald Ross in 1917 and later modified by Ellis Maples, follows the natural contours of the land without artificial mounding or excessive bunkering. Fairways are lined with mature hardwoods, including several stands of post oaks that predate the club’s founding. Water comes into play on seven holes, most notably a creek that crosses the 5th and 13th fairways and a pond that guards the left side of the 18th green. The greens are built to USGA specifications and consist of bentgrass maintained at tournament speed. Cart paths are asphalt and kept to the perimeter of most holes, preserving the walkability of the layout. The clubhouse, constructed in 1927 and expanded in the 1980s, sits on a slight rise overlooking the first tee and 18th green, its brick exterior and slate roof reflecting the period’s Colonial Revival style.
