Conway Farms Golf Club, Lake Forest, IL, Real Estate
Conway Farms Golf Club occupies a former farmland site in Lake Forest, Illinois, where Tom Fazio shaped the fairways around a network of wetlands and mature oaks that predate the course. The layout moves between open meadow stretches and tighter corridors defined by existing hedgerows, forcing players to adjust shot shape and trajectory rather than simply distance. Water enters play on several holes, most notably a pair of ponds flanking the closing stretch, while native grasses frame many of the greens and dictate conservative bail-out angles. Drainage tiles left over from the property’s agricultural days still function beneath the turf, keeping the fairways firm even after heavy Midwest rains. Bunkers are cut low and angular, their edges meeting the surrounding turf at sharp angles that reward precise approaches and punish half-hearted escapes. The routing returns to the clubhouse after nine holes, a nod to the original farm lanes that once crossed the land.
