Southwood Golf Club occupies a 1,500-acre tract that once held the state’s psychiatric hospital. The course winds through stands of longleaf pine and across the site’s original drainage swales, which were left intact and now serve as natural hazards. Architect Fred Couples routed the layout so that several fairways run parallel to the historic brick buildings, creating sight lines that are both architectural and strategic. Greens are built to USGA specifications and vary from subtle two-tier complexes to sharply crowned surfaces that reject approaches missing the proper line. Bunkers are edged with stacked-sod walls rather than traditional wooden boards, giving them a firm, consistent lip. The irrigation system draws from on-site stormwater ponds that also double as wildlife habitat for wading birds and alligators. Cart paths follow the old service roads of the hospital grounds, keeping them largely out of play while preserving the open character of the property.
