The Desert Mountain Club’s Renegade Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, sits amid rugged Sonoran terrain northwest of Scottsdale. Its fairways thread through stands of saguaro and cholla while crossing dry washes and rising over low volcanic ridges. The routing alternates between open desert stretches and tighter corridors framed by granite outcrops. Greens are built on subtle grade changes that reward precise approach angles and attentive putting. Bunkers, edged with native desert material, define landing zones and guard many putting surfaces. Wind sweeping across the open landscape adds another variable, particularly on holes that climb or descend the natural elevation shifts. A series of strategic options—alternate tee placements, risk-reward lines over arroyos, and bailout areas—gives players choices on each shot. Maintenance practices emphasize drought-tolerant turf and native vegetation, keeping the course visually consistent with its desert setting while preserving firm, fast playing conditions typical of the region.
